Remarks: Our family arrived here January 9th, 1852 and at once began housekeeping in one of Mr. Nathaniel Lanes’ paper houses situated on Washington Street hill. Nearby was a steep flight of stairs that was torn down where Powell ST. was cut through. One morning sometime after our family was settled in their new home, I went to the top of the stairs to look about. On the hill I saw beautiful wildflowers. The golden poppy of Cal. And childlike wished to gather them. Mother consented and I induced the Bryant’s son Willie to accompany me. We climbed up the stairs and to the top of the hill. We ran about picking flowers and paying heed to time when suddenly we realized that we were lost. We wandered around for a long time crying and rubbing our dirty faces. The wind was blowing hard from the west and we did not know where our home was. Then we met Doctor Sorbet, the physician of the steamer on which we came. The doctor escorted us to the Washington bath house opposite the El Dorado hotel and then up Stockton St. and thence to our home. We were footsore and weary but happy.
