Remarks: Was married June 6th, 1852. Left Fair Haven June 17th, left New York June 21st on Stm. Daniel Webster crossed by Nicaragua route. Left 19 days after on Stm. Pioneer that had made the trip around Cape Horn and reached us in a leaking condition owing to too close contact with rocks in Talcahuano harbor. Left Stm. on beach in San Simeon Bay and proceeded to San Francisco on Stm. Sea Bird a small steamer plying along the southern coast. Arrived in S.F. Aug 23rd after a passage of 268 days. Was quite surprised in what we saw in the city we had heard so much of. No sign of gold in its original form but sand sand everywhere. The primitive condition of the country and the mixed population was a surprise to me who was away from home for the first time. Have lived 13 years in Monterey, 21 in Santa Cruz,  and 11 in S.F. Have had ten children, five who are living.
