Remarks: Came by Panama route. My Grandfather John M. Ward left N.Y. in 1849; came by Ox-cart and arrives in California Feb. 1, 1850; went to the mines and returned to S.F. then left for New York to visit relatives; lived to be 86 and spent the last years in Santa Rosa.

Remarks: Rev. Owens arrived in Sacramento in ’49; was the first Missionary commissioned to California by the Methodist Church; was the Founder of the University of the Pacific; came to Santa Clara valley in ’51; started a 160 acre homestead on the Santa Clara Stevens Creek Road. His work was carried on until his demise in 1866. His only daughter, Sarah, crossed the plains with her parents at the age of 12; she was my Grand-mother.

Remarks: Father came by ox-team across the pains. Father passed away in S.F. – 98 years old; people would visit him to hear about the water coming up to Montgomery St. – He was one of the first passengers to ride on the Clay St. cars; of which Mr. Halliday was the Inventor.

Remarks: My father left Iowa  in 1851 with 3 young men; they had an Ox-team, a little money and plenty of urge; they took turns driving, while the other three, walked and arrived in this State, tired and foot-sore, but courageous. Father mined in Michigan Bar; contracted small-pox and afterward returned to his birth-place Shippensburg, by way of the Isthmus on account of the death of his Mother; returned to California in ’69 with a wife and two babies; never left the State again only to visit his old Home. – My Grandfather, [illegible] Potts came with the Gold Rush in ’49; never returned to the East and died in Eureka, in the Pioneer Plot is where he was buried. I married Charles F. Le Long, a Native Son, home on Natoma St, S.F. His Parents came here from N.Y. in 1847.
