Remarks: Both my parents were of Colonial lineage. My fathers’ family dated from 1700. Their journey across the continent was without any particular danger excepting illness. However my parents and their three little sons arrived in California in fairly good health. My mother died in Solano County in 1863 and my father in San Francisco January 5th, 1893.

Remarks: My father died in Vallejo Dec 11- 1882. He arrived in California via Cape Horn in or about 1847, returning here several years later via Isthmus of Panama. My mother also came by way of the Isthmus of Panama. Miss Sundquist is a school teacher in Vallejo, Cal.

Remarks: My father and mother came to California across the Plains by an emigrant train. Their train was the second largest Caravan that came across the plains in 1849. My fathers’ brother was one of the party. Being a very strong man six feet in height, he became the scout of the party. They usually preceded the train armed with a shot gun. As they were going over a mountain trail and just as they reached the top he saw and Indian armed with a gun. My uncle fired and killed him. Another Indian appeared also armed with a gun. After uncle had dispatched him the others took to flight. No doubt you have heard of the Keefer Children. They were massacred by the Indians. My mother prepared them for burial. Such were the trials and tribulations of all who came here across the plains in 1849.
