My grandfather was John Henry Klee, born in Germany Nov. 26, 1823. He came by boat to N.Y. at the age of eighteen, lived there until he was twenty years old – Married and came to Calif. 1857. He located in Sacramento and worked at his trade, a cigar maker, moved to Oakland Calif. where he went into business. He died at the age of sixty eight in Oakland Nov. 16, 1893 at the age of 70.

Remarks: My father and my mother were both born in Castroville in 1842. I was born in the Santa Lucia Mountains, called Rockland or the Big Sur, and baptized in Soledad or San Antonio Mission.
My grandparents came from Spain and settled in Castroville, Monterey Co. and took up land and became cattle raisers. All members of my family were from Castroville. Monterey was the Capital of Calif. under three flags and the birthplace of the state’s constitution.
