Remarks: Father came around Horn. My Grandfather was born in N.Y. 1807; died in ’97; he was a clerk in the N.Y. Post Office when gold was discovered in California; sailed on ship and arrived in ’49. Not meeting with success in the gold field he returned to N.Y. in 1850 and in ’51 brought the family, consisting of his wife and two sons, John and David Short; and orphan-niece whom he raised and educated; in 1868, Grandfather was made Captain of the Police at Fourth and Folsom Sts. where he served for 27 years; retired in 1859 and passed away two years later. He was a member of the Exempt and Veteran Firemen and Pioneers.

Remarks: My Grand-father Otis Ashley, a native son of Martinssberg N.Y. married Sarah Mather of Plainsfield, Ill. When the spirit of adventure moved him, he and Grand-mother and her parents came here with her father, mother, and brother James and Sally and son Col. Clark Mathers; joined a caravan of 40 wagons and started for California by ox-team. The first night out the Indians stole a yoke of oxen; they travelled from the Platte River to Fort Laramie, nothing to burn but buffalo chips; later going south from Salt Lake, without water, for 70 miles. crossed the Truckee River and reached their destination on Oct. 30, 1846, just before the storms that destroyed the ill-fated Donner Party. He enlisted with the California Guards at Santa Clara Mission. Guarding women and children, served 3 months under Gen. Fremont. During the battle of Santa Clara, the garrison consisted of only 30 men; he acted as Cook, in the Belfry from which point he watched the Battle. After his discharge from the Army in ’47, he went to Santa Cruz Co. and settled on 2000 acres of Government land. In Oct. ’47 he moved to San Jose, and lived there until 1856. Before moving back to Felton, death overtook him in his 84th year; he had operated the saw-mill for a quarter of a century.
