Remarks: The Oakes Family was founded upon the arrival of my Grandfather, Anthony George Oakes in Sonoma after serving in The Mexican War. The young man brought with him letters of introduction and recommendation to Commandant Vallejo in charge of the garrison of Northern California. General Vallejo established the young soldier, on a grant of land at his Rancho in Petaluma. Young Oakes studied the Hotel Business and became one of the well known artists in the culinary and Hotel Business of that time. (See People of the Pueblo – The story of Sonoma by Celest E. Murphy page 293) Anthony Oakes, Tony Oakes as he was called was Mayor of Sonoma for several turns in the early years of 1850 and 1860. When the garrison was moved to Yerba Buena, grandfather transferred his business to that settlement, his business growing with the town until he had quite a well known establishment. Tony Oakes contributed much to his time as a patron of the arts possessed with a fine singing voice and a musician, he sang in the local Opera, his place being a mecca for the musicians, artists, and people of the theater. William Ralston, founder of the Palace Hotel established Tony Oakes at Crystal Springs San Mateo County when the carriage trade began. After the flood year, grand father settled in Haywards. Tony Oakes Hotel was well known around the bay. Mayer Edwin Sherman, a life friend of his Mexican War days, paid a fine tribute in conducting final services 1903.
